Modular Steel Shelving

Modular steel shelving approaches storage as a system rather than a fixed object. Repeatable components allow the same structure to respond to different spaces, functions and configurations while maintaining a consistent construction logic.

In residential, retail and professional interiors, shelving can do more than hold objects. It can organise a wall, establish a display rhythm or become a light spatial framework. At NM3, this flexibility begins with material and assembly: steel planes, horizontal shelves and vertical uprights form open structures in which each element has a precise role.

What defines modular steel shelving?

A shelving system is modular when variation is built into its construction.

Instead of producing a single composition, the system is developed through elements that can be repeated, repositioned, or assembled in different configurations. Height, length and internal rhythm can therefore respond to the space without changing the original design language.

A modular system is defined by a limited number of principles:

  • Repeatable structural components;
  • A consistent relationship between shelves and uprights;
  • Mechanical or dry assembly;
  • Configurations based on a shared dimensional logic;
  • The possibility of dismantling and reconfiguring the structure.

This distinguishes modular steel shelving from a conventional bookshelf available only in predetermined dimensions. The system follows a precise set of rules, but those rules allow different results.

Why steel works for modular systems

Steel combines structural performance with reduced thickness. It allows shelves and uprights to maintain a slim profile while supporting substantial weight and preserving the visual openness of the composition.

This relationship is central to shelving design. The structure must remain stable without visually competing with the books, objects, or products it contains.

Stainless steel also interacts directly with the surrounding environment. Mirror and satin finishes reflect light, colour and movement differently, changing the perception of the shelving according to the observer’s position.

The material does not require decorative additions to establish its presence. Surface, junctions and proportions become part of the design. Marks created through production and use remain visible, recording the life of the object rather than being concealed.

NM26: a reconfigurable steel bookshelf

The NM26 modern steel bookshelf translates this approach into a freestanding vertical system.

Its structure combines horizontal shelves with interchangeable, removable, and repositionable uprights. By changing the arrangement of these elements, NM26 can move from a low configuration with two shelves to a vertical structure with up to seven shelves.

The proportions and formal language remain consistent across each version. Adaptation is achieved through the reconfiguration of the existing uprights, without modifying the core structure.

NM26 measures 170 cm in width and 35 cm in depth, reaching a maximum height of 250 cm. Made from 1.5 mm BA stainless steel, it is fully demountable and can be reduced to separate components for transport, storage, or future reconfiguration.

The system is available in stainless steel and in NM3’s powder-coated RAL selection. Designed for indoor and outdoor environments, it can function as a bookshelf, display structure or freestanding spatial element.

NM25: the horizontal alternative

Modularity does not always need to develop vertically.

The NM25 steel console applies a related construction logic to a lower, horizontal volume. Its dry-assembled structure is articulated through open compartments that support different uses without altering the object.

At 180 cm wide, 35 cm deep, and 89 cm high, NM25 can operate as a bookshelf, vinyl console, storage unit, or display system. Its upper surface also creates a continuous plane for objects, equipment or temporary compositions.

While NM26 uses the full height of a wall, NM25 establishes a lower horizontal line and leaves the space above visually open. The choice between the two systems therefore depends on how the shelving needs to interact with the architecture, not only on its storage capacity.

From modular furniture to spatial systems

The construction logic behind NM26 can extend beyond the dimensions of a single bookshelf.

Presented during Milan Design Week 2026 as part of CASA NM3, NMS02 develops the same principle into a linear shelving system. Horizontal shelves and vertical uprights are repeated across the space, creating longer compositions while preserving structural continuity.

In this configuration, shelving moves closer to architecture. It becomes a framework capable of organising storage, display, and spatial hierarchy through the same limited family of components.

The system can also be adapted to specific functions. For the RAL7000STUDIO headquarters in Milan, NM3 developed a custom NM26-based bookshelf for footwear display. The number of uprights was increased to create a denser internal partition, calibrated around the products shown within it.

The original construction remains recognisable, but its rhythm changes in response to the project. This is the difference between modularity and simple standardisation: the system adapts without losing its identity.

Dry assembly and material efficiency

The performance of modular steel shelving depends on how its components are connected.

NM3 develops its shelving through dry-assembled metal systems. Components are mechanically joined rather than treated as a permanently closed structure. This keeps the construction legible and allows the object to be dismantled into separate elements.

The same principle makes transport and storage more efficient, facilitates relocation, and allows the configuration to respond to new spatial requirements over time.

In its untreated stainless steel version, the material retains its natural industrial surface. Subtle marks and variations are not concealed, allowing each object to evolve through use. The absence of unnecessary finishing processes also preserves the direct relationship between material, production and final form.

Modularity therefore affects more than the appearance of the shelving. It determines how the object is produced, assembled, transported and used throughout its lifecycle.

Shelving as spatial infrastructure

Modular steel shelving sits between furniture and architecture.

It provides storage, but it can also determine proportion, movement and hierarchy within a space. Its role is not simply to decorate a wall, but to establish a clear structure capable of supporting different uses over time.

Through repeatable components, precise assembly and the direct use of industrial materials, NM3 develops shelving systems that remain adaptable without becoming visually temporary.
